Bad news...
All roads heading north are flooded, we tried several detours, now chance. we are now heading back to the Sunshinecoast and wait for better weather.

I ♥ Brisbane
We are now in Brisbane sience two days. The weather is still the same. Rain all day, sometimes thunderstorm. Hardly any time without water pouring from the sky.
I can t change the weather, so I have to get along with it. Somehow. After spending one night on a campsite just out of Brisbane, one of the worst nights ever till now on my trip, we decided to stay in a hostel the next two nights in Brisbane.
After some phonecalls we ended up in "Minto House", a very nice small hostel 5 minutes from the southbank in Brisbane. And it s not very expensiv, very few people stay here at the moment, the weather is just not right for this beautiful city. We spent some time walking thru the CBD. I decided to do the sight seeing tour with thongs (flipflops), umbrella, shorts and a tshirt. ood idea. I ended up walking barefoot thru town as it was too slippery. Toni has chosen to wear a poncho and noral shoes ... He ended up buying flipflops and an umbrella ... Much more convinient.
I would love to live in Brisbane, this town is awsome. ALthough I haven t xperienced it in its warm and dry weather, I am sure it is a nice city.
In the evening we have been to the movies, Tron legacy 3D. You have to like the first one otherwise u don t really understand this one.
Today we have been to the Lone Pines Koala Sanctuary. or those people who can't get enough of those little creautures, that s the right spot. You can hug them, take pictures with them and other animals like Wallabies, Kangaroos. Nice park, worth the 24$ entrance fee.
Tonite we ll go down to Southbank again, have a look and I ll taste some choclate from Max Brenner. Somebody recommended to do so. Why not :-D ?
Tomorrow we will try to head north, also some streets are flooded the way up. As long its not too bad I somehow get thru there with Patrick. Will add some extra thrill to the trip.

Merry Christmas!
Hey everybody,
first of all, I wish you all the best for Christmas. Enjoy thoses special days with your loved ones. I am not really in christmas mood , it is too warm. I don t miss it here.
We rached Byron bay today. Cape Byron is the most eastern point of Mainland Australia.Maybe we ll continue our journey to brisbane, we are not to sure about that.
But what has happened since my last entry?
We drove past Sydney, as we will visit it on our way back. It's too busy there and too expensive at the moment. We have been doplhin watching and had driving in the dunes with Patrick. Driving in sand nearly feels like driving in snow. drove up the dunes and down again, not a big problem in my car. Just the higher dunes were quite a problem, but thats because I have no experience driving in sand, so we always got stuck halfway up. Reversing out brought us back down. Too bad we didn t make the big ones, but it was an awsome experience anyway. And the best: It was nearly free. Al the other tourists pay a lot of money to get into the dunes.
In Port Maquarie I visited the Kooala Hospital. The first time I saw an kooala ... I hope I ll see more of those funny creautures on my way up north. Most of the Koalas were the victim of an car accident or a dog attack. Most of the treated animals survive and are release back into the wildness again.

en route
Hi everyone,
I am spending my third night in a caravan park just out of Sydney.
We had our first stop in Canberra. I visited the Australian Parliament house, Telstra Tower, the war memorila and the botanical gardens.
An old tank in front of the museum ... No fees for havig a look inside,too. Great audio and visual stuff inside. Worth a visit guys!
On top tof the australian parliament house. They got a good lawn up there ... And the admission was free again!
We stood the night on a campground in Canberra. In the second night we camped up in the mountains, it was very cold and rainy. No other person was there, we had the whole rest area just off an highway for ourself.
We had a tough second night up in the Great dividing Range ... Wet, cold, and very windy .... But Whiskey and a warm meal somehow let us survived the night ...
On the way to the next destination we came passed the "Abercrombie National Park" ... too bad the "& Fitch" was missing :-( But it was a nice ride thru the montains there, very steep and very lonly.... Just few cars coming the other direction for some time ... Parick had some Problems with the steep grades after we reached the Abercrombie river in the valley. The breaks were nearly not resonding after we reached the bottom of the valley although I used a loe gear for the decend and after the ascend out of the valley, the clutch had a high temerature alert on m dashboard.... Those "incedents" forced us for some stops on this part of the trip!
That's the bridge over the Abercrombie river down in the valley. We had a break here to cool down the breaks and the transmission of my car as both were very hot after the 900m descend .... The road we drove down (and up on the other side) was the worst and steppest one I have ever travelled on with a car... And yes, MALTA wasn't that bad brothers!!!!
Too bad it wasn't "Abercrombie and Fitch" National Park ... And too bad I couldn t find my AF shirt for that picture :-)
On the next day we had a look at the Jeolan Caves and continued our journey into the Blue Mountains. We had a look at all the usual tourist stuff and decided to make an hiking trip down into the blue valley. It was definatley worth doing so, it was an astonishing landspace and we had some very nice views from the path winding down the cliffs into the valley.
That's me on top off the ridge and in the second photoI am all the way down into the valley. I can tell you .... That path we took was one of the hardest I have ever seen in my life ... Switzerland and Asutria ? Easy going ... those are a stroll in the park compared to the one I had there!
Today we arrived in Vineyard, a town near Windsor, west of Sydney. It is a very nice caravan park, we got a pool and even free internet. I hope you guys in Germany enjoy the cold weather. :-p

Last day in Albury-Wodonga
Just one more day at work tomorrow and I am heading off to my big trip up the coast. Toni will arrive tonight in Albury after he has spent some time down in Melbourne. My car is ready, everything is packed.
We will stay on campsites, caravan parks, youth hostels, truck stops or just the car park of some Evil Mega Markt. We haven t really planned a route yet, as we don t know how long we want to stay at all the different places. But that s not important as we are independent and can sleep in the car anywhere we want.
Our first night will be on a truck stop between all the big trucks with their double trailers. That s all we planned till now :-D .

Last week before the big trip
Hello everybody,
it has been ten days since my last blog entry, sorry for that. I was quite busy with work again and had some troubles with the internet here. Anyway ... Sience my last entry it has been very wet again around the Border Region, there were several flood warning in the media present. After some heavy rainfalls during the nights and in the last week , the Hume Dam, which is already at 100% capacity, needs to drain water out of the reservoir to prevent damage to the Dam. Because Albury and Wodonga are downstream, our feet got wet here.
On Sunday I have been up to the Dam and had a look myself. Very impressive! Besides the regular car pa for the Dam, I found a small offroad track down to the dam foot and went to had a closer look.
You can clearly see ... Its FULL!
The administration even opened a second gate to handle all the water masses to drain the reservoir.

In town it's quite okay, damages are only in the parks as they act as natural overflow for the river. But during the heavy rain, many streets flooded because the gutters couldn't take more water. The soil is completely saturated with water, so every additional drip is surface water running to the lowest point.
But I am glad, that the rain is over now. At least that's what the weather guys tell us. I ll start my trip on Friday, Toni will be here on Thursday. Looking forward getting out of this village and have a look around.
Last Friday I have been to a BBQ/Party of one of my colleagues. It was a nice typical Australian BBQ with Bristish style sausages ... Not that nice, but the salads and the other stuff was superb. I don't know how it happened, I had to play Santa Claus for approx. 13 kids aged 7 and under later the evening. A Santa with German accent ? LOL, whatever, they were all very happy and the kids were quite convinced as all their dads were there too. Only that German Dude was missing during Santas visit ...
Afterwards I was in the urgent need for beer. It got very late that friday evening ....

Busy with preparations
Hi there,
I am very busy at the moment. Besides going out on the weekend, I driving to all sort of shops and gathering the equipment for the BIG trip.
Saturday night I have been out with Cassie and Sara to the Groove Saint Nite Club. More or less like any other club, nothing special, nice and small, you can t get lost. Only big down there: They can t serve you a Gin Tonic! Seriously, ... omgwtfBBQ!
Monday was the most expensive day yet here in Australia for me. I bought heaps of stuff, have a look:
A stove and a propan can for cooking, pans and cuttlery, boxes, dishes ... A small car shovel, a snatch strap and some shackels. We ll need those, because we ll take a barge to Fraser Island and spent some days there. What's the need for recovery gear then you think? You have to know the following:

I also got a air bed, it fits perfectly into the car. Very comfortable! Just add a sheet, and you got your private camper.
Still enough storage room left underneath, and once we get up, we just deflate the bed and you could continue the trip with five people in the car.
Today I even discoverd that Patrick has got genuine TJM suspension on the front axle, might come in handy.
Actually I was looking for an rear recovery point as the towbar is not rated for snatch strap recovery. I need to find a point which can withstand at least 45kN ( 4,5t Zugkraft ) as this will be the approximate force if I get pulled out or pull somebody out. I assume the bogged car will be around 2t and is digged in.

Pajero mod
Saturday night was awesome. We all went to Albury Dean Street and had an marvelous night out. Hot weather means more people going out in the evening. I like that :-p .
I just finished (actually I am not, still some screws missing, but Bunnings closed today by 6pm already) the modification of Patrick's rear. Have a look.
Add a plywood board on top, and my car is ready for the big trip all the way up to Cairns! And the best is, this modification doesn't really narrow the Patrick's passenger capacity. You can still use the second row, when you deflate the mattress!

It's gettin' hot down here
Hey, finally we got some Australian weather :-D Sonia and I went to her parents' pool today and had an awesome time there.Too bad it's "a bit out of town", 15 min drive from our place here. But it's definite worth going out there!
Besides hanging out the whole day and trying to escape the burning sun, we did some garden work (hell, the lawn was about to start eating the house) and did some varnishing on the garden furniture.
I started modifying my Pajero for the big trip. I removed the 3rd seating row, and all other useless stuff like belts and carpet. At Bunnings Warehouse I got some massive metal brackets to whom I ll attach the wooden poles. On top of that "construction" there ll be the air mattress. Will post some pictures of the final construction.

Success
Konnte es heute morgen auf dem Weg zur Arbeit kaum glauben, aber das Quietschen ist ganz weg. Das Schmieren der Tachowelle hat doch was gebracht!Hat nur etwas gedauert, bis die Schmiere auch überall ankam!
Heute habe ich von meinem Chef auch erfahren, dass die Firma vom 23. Dec bis zum 4. Jan dicht macht. Endlich habe ich definitive angaben und kann planen.
Desweitern erwartet er bis Ende nächster Woche einen Zwischenbericht über meine bisherigen Erfolge und Vorschläge. Aber wird auch langsam Zeit, denn neue Sachen entdecke ich sowieso nicht mehr, es wird langsam monoton.

Nass ...
Hi,
obwohl eigentlich am Wochenende genug Zeit war, um Sachen zu posten, hab ich das total vergessen. Ich war zu sehr damit beschäftigt, mein Pajero teilweise auseinanderzunehmen, um ihn danach wieder zusammenzubauen? Warum ich einfach so mal scheinbar wahllos Sachen ausbau? Weil es irgendwo ganz hässlich gequietscht hat seit letzter Woche ... Also hab ich angefangen den Fehler zu suchen... Da die Klimaanlage auch nicht mehr funktioniert hat, hab ich mir zuerst einmal den Kompressor der AC angeschaut. Und siehe da, der Riemen, der den Kompressor antreibt war total schlapp und lose. Aber gespannt bekommen habe ich ihn auch nicht. Nach ein wenig hin und her: Das ist der falsche Riemen, der Vorbesitzer hat einen zu langen Riemen eingebaut. Deshalb hab ich mir dann für 20$ einen neuen gekauft und installiert.
Aber das Quietschen war immer noch da... Da der Tacho immer wie ein Kuhschwanz wackelt und nie wirklich ruhig ist, hab ich mir überlegt, dass es damit zusammenhängt. Aber wie den Tacho eleminieren? Zum Glück ist der Pajero ein 1991er-Model, die haben noch eine mechanische Tachowelle. Also Tachowelle vom Getriebe gelöst und mal ne Runde um den Block gefahren. Ja! Kein Quietschen mehr. Problem gelöst, denk ich mir.
Da kommt die Tachowelle von links (schwarzes Kabel, Schraubverschluß am Ende des Getriebestrangs). Wer was von Autos versteht sieht oben im Bild das Kabel für die Handbremse wie es auf die beiden Hinterräder aufgeteilt wird. Darunter, das massive runde, beginnt die Welle die die Hinterachse antreibt. Und man erkennt hier auch, dass der Pajero einen permanenten Hinterrad antrieb hat, wenn man im 2WD-Modus ist. Die Vorderräder sind nur im 4WD Modus eingekuppelt.
Die Welle für die Frontwheels sieht man hier. Aber okay, soviel zu einem Mitsubishi Super Select Getriebe.
So einfach ists dann doch nciht. Ohne Tachowelle logischerweise kein Tacho (was kein Problem ist für mich), aber auch kein Kilometerzähler ... Aber den brauch ich, sonst bekomme ich Probleme bei den Inspektionen des Autos ... 0km gefahren innerhalb von 3 Monaten ist schon seltsam, nicht ? Aber super einfache Tachomanipulation, mein Pajero altert nicht mehr, wenn ich will.
Da ich aber den Kilometerzähler brauche, hab ich erst mal die komplette Tachowelle unter dem Auto rausgefriemelt und versucht mit Inox Spray zu schmieren. Damit ich mir nicht den Innenraum versaue, hab ich dann noch die gesamte Instrumententafel ausgebaut. Bei der Gelegenheit ein paar nicht funktionierende Lampen getauscht.Ich hab insgesamt 100ml Inox, sowas wie WD40, in die Außenhülle gesprayt, im Innenraum kam das Zeug dann aus der Welle wieder raus.
Dann noch den Akkuschrauber vom Nachbar auf die Welle gespannt und 5min lang immer wieder Inox rein. Hätte ich den Kilometerzähler dran gehabt, hätte ich mein Auto schnell verjüngen können, aber bringt nichts, steht in den Papieren drin!
Ich kann mit dem Gequietsche leben, da ich jetzt weiß, dass es nichts schlimmes ist. Musik aufdrehen und ignorieren! Eventuell lass ich es in einer Werkstatt reparieren, denn die gesamte Welle bekomme ich nicht ausgebaut. Im Motorraum komme ich nicht überall dran, und der Durchbruch in die Fahrerkabine ist ziemlich schwierig gestaltet.
Ansonsten ist mit Patrick alles okay, habe noch 1/4 Tank und schon gute 400km hinter mir. Und die erste Tankfüllung hatte mich vor 2 Wochen um die 90$ gekostet. Bin mal auf den endgültigen Verbrauch gespannt.
Wäre ja lieben gerne in der Gegend rumgefahren, aber das Wetter war so unberechenbar, zum Glück passt das Auto in die Garage und ich hab dort ein Großteil der Arbeit verrichtet. Aber als es dann am Samstag, später Nachmittag, mal wieder angefangen hat zu regnen, war selbst die Garage nicht mehr trocken, denn das Wasser kam von überall. Oben, seitlich und sogar von unten. Seht selbst!
Der Kerl am Ende des Videos ist Stew. Er ist Sonia's Halbbruder und war an dem Wochenende zu Besuch. Normalerweise schert er Schafe. Der Junge, den man im Hintergrund hört, war auch zu Besuch. Ein Cousin von Sonia.

obwohl eigentlich am Wochenende genug Zeit war, um Sachen zu posten, hab ich das total vergessen. Ich war zu sehr damit beschäftigt, mein Pajero teilweise auseinanderzunehmen, um ihn danach wieder zusammenzubauen? Warum ich einfach so mal scheinbar wahllos Sachen ausbau? Weil es irgendwo ganz hässlich gequietscht hat seit letzter Woche ... Also hab ich angefangen den Fehler zu suchen... Da die Klimaanlage auch nicht mehr funktioniert hat, hab ich mir zuerst einmal den Kompressor der AC angeschaut. Und siehe da, der Riemen, der den Kompressor antreibt war total schlapp und lose. Aber gespannt bekommen habe ich ihn auch nicht. Nach ein wenig hin und her: Das ist der falsche Riemen, der Vorbesitzer hat einen zu langen Riemen eingebaut. Deshalb hab ich mir dann für 20$ einen neuen gekauft und installiert.
Aber das Quietschen war immer noch da... Da der Tacho immer wie ein Kuhschwanz wackelt und nie wirklich ruhig ist, hab ich mir überlegt, dass es damit zusammenhängt. Aber wie den Tacho eleminieren? Zum Glück ist der Pajero ein 1991er-Model, die haben noch eine mechanische Tachowelle. Also Tachowelle vom Getriebe gelöst und mal ne Runde um den Block gefahren. Ja! Kein Quietschen mehr. Problem gelöst, denk ich mir.
Da kommt die Tachowelle von links (schwarzes Kabel, Schraubverschluß am Ende des Getriebestrangs). Wer was von Autos versteht sieht oben im Bild das Kabel für die Handbremse wie es auf die beiden Hinterräder aufgeteilt wird. Darunter, das massive runde, beginnt die Welle die die Hinterachse antreibt. Und man erkennt hier auch, dass der Pajero einen permanenten Hinterrad antrieb hat, wenn man im 2WD-Modus ist. Die Vorderräder sind nur im 4WD Modus eingekuppelt.
Die Welle für die Frontwheels sieht man hier. Aber okay, soviel zu einem Mitsubishi Super Select Getriebe.
So einfach ists dann doch nciht. Ohne Tachowelle logischerweise kein Tacho (was kein Problem ist für mich), aber auch kein Kilometerzähler ... Aber den brauch ich, sonst bekomme ich Probleme bei den Inspektionen des Autos ... 0km gefahren innerhalb von 3 Monaten ist schon seltsam, nicht ? Aber super einfache Tachomanipulation, mein Pajero altert nicht mehr, wenn ich will.

Gravity 2010
Hi,
es ist Sonntag, kurz vor zwölf. Bin vor 2h aus dem Busch zurück in die Zivilisation gekommen. Geniales Wochenende! Ich wuerde jederzeit wieder mitmachen! Zum Glück hab ich ein 4WD! Nur bischen kalt wars in der Nacht... Aber alles der Reihe nach:
Freitag gegen 1200 sind wir, Dan und ich, hier in Wodonga los gefahren gen Süden, auf zum großen Gravity 2010 Mountainbike Race. Der Weg dahin war eine landschaftliche Pracht. Da achtet man nicht so sehr auf den Tachometer und zack hatten wir ein Trooper im Rueckspiegel, aber der hatte es noch eiliger als wir und ist erst mal an uns vorbei gerauscht. Nach ein paar Minuten wussten wir dann auch warum: Ein paar Motorräder hier, ein paar im Graben eins im Feld ... Sah aber nicht so schlimm aus!
Hier sieht man eine Bergkette, die letztes Jahr im Bushfeuer komplett abgebrannt ist. Die schwarzen Streifen sind die Überreste des verkohlten Waldes, die zusammengepfercht wurden.
Nach knapp 90 min haben wir dann die "Abzweigung" ins nirgendwo gefunden. Erst wars eine recht annehmbare Schotterstraße bis zum Farmhaus, danach wurds übel. Gleich mal in 4LLc , also Vierrad Untersetzt mit gesperrtem Mittel und Heckdifferenzial. Gut vielleicht etwas übertrieben, aber ich will ja auch wissen ob das klappt, wenn ichs schon hab. Also dann gute 15min durch den Busch durch Wasserläufe, Sand und über was man sich sonst noch so vorstellen kann.
Am Eventort angekommen, öffnete sich der Wald und das Unterholz zu einer großen Wiese, die für die nächsten drei Tage unser zu Hause sein sollte. Dan und ich waren früh dran, konnten uns deshalb einen guten Spot direkt am Track sichern. Dann hieß es erstmal Pavillion aufbauen, Zelt aufbauen, BBQ raus, Tisch aufgeklappt und Bikes vom Auto.
Dan beim Aufbauen der Zelte. Dan ist "Line 3 and Metalliser Manager", super Kerl. Von ihm hab ich mein Bike für das Wochenende und ein Großteil der Campingausrüstung bekommen.

So langsam füllte sich dann auch die Wiese mit immer mehr Teilnehmern, Support Crews oder einfach nur Freunde und Familie. Gegen Abend sah es aus wie in ner riesigen Zeltstadt. Es gab sogar oben einen Klo-Trailer und ein Trailer mit Duschen (ja, auch heißes Wasser).
Dieser Q5, hats irgendwie verbockt ...
Ich hatte bei dieser Stelle keine Probleme mit meinem Pajero!
Später kamen dann auch noch Paul und Baren, sowie Pauls Sohn Justin dazu. Nachdem wir unser Camp aufgebaut hatten, sind wir dann zur Testrunde aufgebrochen, um uns gemeinsam die Rundstrecke anzuschauen. 13,7 km durch erbarmungsloses Hinterland, teilweise kein Schatten, teilweise Schlammlöcher die ganze Fahrräder verschlucken können, dann wieder herrliche langgezogene Gefälle.
Die Strecke kurz zusammengefasst: Bergab gehts raus aus dem Camp, vorbei an einem kleinen Weiher, dann wieder hoch über offenes Feld bis zur Baumlinie, dort immer weiter höher und höher, bis man bei 3km zum "Gravity Fall" kommt. Da gehts dann gut 1km nur steil bergab. Nun, was man runter fährt muss man auch wieder hoch. Bei 5km kommt dann der "Heartbreak Hill". Ich habs nicht mal versucht, der ist zu Fuß schon zu brutal. Ein paar Profis habens trotzdem irgendwie ohne Absteigen geschafft.
Einmal oben kommt dann der beste Abschnitt: "Mojo", angenehmes bergab, nicht zu steil, schön schattig, dafür aber voller Wellen und Schlaglöcher. Danach der "Buffalo Way", wo's durch feuchte Wiesen und Schlammlöcher, den man aber noch ausweichen kann, durch saftiges und grünes Unterholz ging. Dann noch mal ein steiler Berg hoch, noch mal einige kms entlang und durch ein Bach. Am Ende, noch mal ein hässlich sich ziehender Anstieg hoch zum Camp und dann noch von unten durchs ganze Camp hoch bis zum "Zielhäuschen", wo die Zeit genommen wird.
Nach 80 min waren wir zurück, ich total am Ende, direkt zum Bier gegriffen und den Tag ausklingen lassen.
Gegen 2000 haben wir dann gegrillt. Baren, am Tisch, Paul im Hintergrund, Justin links im Bild, und Dan bruzelt sich die Augenbraun ab ....
Die Nacht war arschkalt, ich schätze mal so um die 5°C, ich hab im Auto geschlafen mit Schlafsack und zwei Armydecken. Wenn mal einmal pennt ist es okay, man muss aber erst mal soweit sein ^^.
Während dem BBQ-Frühstück dann die Frage: Wer macht die erste Runde? Ich denk mir, noch ist es nicht zu heiß, die Strecke noch relativ okay und nicht komplett mit Löchern übersät ... Ich mach's. 150 Leute auf einmal, Massensprint zu den Bikes an der Startlinie und dann Punkt 9: Startschuss!

Da ich den Rundkurs schon kannte von gestern, waren zum Glück keine Überraschungen für mich drin und ich wusste was auf mich zukommt. Um 9am war Start, 90min später war ich zurück. Keine gute Zeit, aber hey, immerhin hab ich die Runde geschafft. Nacheinander sind dann die anderen an den Start gegangen, wie beim Staffellauf. Dan, Baren und Justin haben so um die 50 bis 60 min für ihre Runden gebraucht. Aber die sind ja auch in einem Mountainbikeclub und machen das öfters.
Da komm ich gerade die letzte Steigung hoch ...
... komplett erschöpft ...
... aber ich habs ....
....geschafft!
Aber ich bin mit meinen 90 min absolut zufrieden, da ich im Prinzip ja Neuling bin was diese Art von Cycling angeht. Die schnellste Runde war übrigens 35 min, aber nicht von unserem Team.
Dan bei seiner Einfahrt.
Die zweite Runde habe ich dann auch mit 90 min gemeistert. Hatte dann schon 3h auf dem Buckel und konnte kaum noch stehen geschweige denn mein Bier richtig halten. 12h insgesamt, vier Leute im Team, ich hatte meine 3h, nur fair sag ich da :-p . Zwar nur 2 Runden aber mir hats gereicht.
Justin ist um 2000 noch mal zur letzten Runde raus, mit kompletter Beleuchtung, sonst wirds schwierig auf der Strecke zu bleiben!
Am Abend gabs dann noch eine Siegererung und die Platzierungen. Wir waren Platz 117 von knapp 150 Teams. Ganz okay, sind ja nur zum campen gekommen :-D .
Am morgen danach große Aufbruchsstimmung.
Keiner mehr da, Zeit dass wir auch abhauen.
